Questions to settle before buying a futures prop firm challenge
Is a futures challenge billed monthly or once?
Both models exist, and a price ending in /mo in the table is billed monthly, though at some firms that figure covers only the first month. Take Profit Trader’s Test, Topstep’s Trading Combine and Elite Trader Funding’s 1 Step bill monthly, while Apex, Tradeify and Blue Guardian’s futures plans are charged once. On a monthly plan, check what stops the billing: Take Profit Trader stops it when you pass but not when you break a rule, and Elite Trader Funding keeps charging after a pass until the Elite account is activated.
When does a futures activation fee fall due?
After you pass, not at checkout, so it is not part of the challenge price in the table, and some firms bill it monthly rather than once. Take Profit Trader charges a one-time fee to open a PRO account, Topstep charges one on its Trading Combine and Trading Combine DLL lines and none on its No Activation Fee lines, and Elite Trader Funding offers a monthly or a one-time activation on its subscription plans, with the first month free on Fast Track. Blue Guardian states no activation fee on its futures accounts. Add it to the entry fee, any monthly renewals and any required add-on to see what reaching a funded account takes.
Does a bigger futures account make the challenge easier to pass?
Not by itself, because the profit target grows with the account and the room to lose does not always grow at the same rate. At Take Profit Trader the target is 6% at every size, but the maximum drawdown is $1,500 on $25,000 and $4,500 on $150,000, so the target equals the drawdown on the $25,000 account and is twice it on the $150,000 account. Compare the target with the drawdown and the contract limit at the size you plan to buy.
Can I skip the evaluation and start on a funded futures account?
Yes, some firms sell a direct route with no evaluation, and you pay for skipping the test up front. Blue Guardian and Tradeify sell both, so compare the direct route’s entry price in the table with an evaluation of the same size at the same firm. Funded rules apply from the first trade, and a direct account can still set a profit goal before the first payout, as Blue Guardian’s does.
Do futures challenges have a deadline to pass?
Some do and some do not, and the limit is set per product rather than per firm. Apex gives 30 calendar days with no extensions, Ment Funding gives 90 calendar days from the first trade, with a longer window sold as an add-on on its $400,000 futures account, and Elite Trader Funding’s Fast Track must be passed within 10 calendar days or it fails and cannot be reset. Topstep and Blue Guardian’s Futures: Standard set no time limit, though on a monthly plan every extra month adds another fee.
Why do some futures challenges show two prices?
The first figure is the firm’s list price and the second is the price after a discount the firm was running, with its code or promotion noted beside it. Discounts can expire or change, and where a banner and the checkout disagree, the checkout is the price you pay. Every price stays in the currency the firm charges and is never converted.
